no. way: Praise/Liturgical Dancewear

euww.

there was a rumor that our church once had liturgical dancers. i'd heard stories about faces getting hit with flapping sleeves, women dressed in white prancing down the center aisle for palm sunday, pastors hiding their faces in embarrassment.

thankfully, i've never seen it.

and after seeing the costumes i hope i never will.

It can be done well.

But those costumes are hideous.

Yes, I've seen it done well, too, but not in those frocks, which are scary.

Okay, I am (was) a liturgical dancer, and I *never* would have worn those bizarre get-ups. Eewww is right.

Frightening. But dance in church can be pretty amazing. Our church had some dancers at Easter. And, in the film Rize, seeing a couple of the kids dancing at church is just beautiful.

let's hear it for polyester!

i was looking for dance shoes. tango, ballroom...then i saw the whole liturgical costume thing...

i'm amazed that, as liberal as i am, i think church dance is weird.

but hey! if it's your gift, go for it!

I really try to keep an open mind...I am even learning to appreciate opera...but I just don't get liturgical dance. I know...I know...David dancing before the Ark of the Covenant, etc. [hanging head in shame]

Come to think of it...what was David wearing during his liturgical dance?...

Richard Gere as King David was wearing a diaper, if I remember correctly.

i do not need an image of a grown man wearing a diaper dancing in church.

True story: Back in college, our campus parish was across the street from a halfway house for community mental health patients. They'd occasionally drop in at the chapel just to talk to the secretary or sit in the sanctuary. One day our secretary was busy doing one thing or the other and heard a strange clattering noise coming from the sanctuary. She looked inside, and there was one of the guys from the halfway house, totally naked, dancing back and forth across the collection plates, which he'd put on the floor upside down like stepping stones.

Oh wow. I had never seen the costumes, much less the actual dancers. Hmmm.

and NOW my roomie wants us to buy some!

"it's just too good, we have to," she said. then she pointed to the lady squatting in that religious kung-fu pose and called her her favorite.

my birthday is in two months and i shudder to think what i'm going to get.

hey, if you're lucky, maybe you'll get that dashing gold lame number;)

i've seen good liturgical dance, but i've never seen such hideous dancewear!

It certainly CAN be done well, but those of us who try often get berated for not wanting the 'traditional' costumes.

Sorry, but there's nothing pretty about falling on your face because you tripped on your skirt. :P

This girl has an excellent viewpoint as well. :)
