ah, so THAT'S the answer!

Black coalition 'codifies' values - The Washington Times: Nation/Politics - March 23, 2005

ok, so this article comes from the Moonie newspaper in washington. doesn't mean it's full of crackpots...

or does it?
...
once more we're given the message that black folks just need to be more responsible and exude the right values. huh. ok. i can get behind that. i'm black. i'm responsible. i even go to church.

why do i think this new 'values' coalition is a bunch of crap, then?

You think it's crap because it's a bunch of people who know all the answers getting together to tell those losers who aren't as smart as they are what they need to do to improve themselves. They may be right; heck, they probably are right, but that approach almost invariably fails.

Their prescription is probably correct ('you should do x, and then things will be better'); it's the implicit subjunctive that I think is crap ('if I were you, I'd do x'), and it's the subjunctive that creates the smarminess.
