boys will be boys? or war is hell?

i don't know how many people are following this but it's a story that turns my stomach: a disturbed GI takes it into his head to 'kill Iraqis' and so gets guys from his platoon to gang rape and kill a young girl, setting her body on fire to conceal their crime - and kill her entire family besides.

Iraq Incident Was Fueled by Whiskey, G.I. Says - New York Times

what are we doing there?

our hubris has turned us into (there's no other word for it) savages.

It's all part of our terrorist training program. So far it's been pretty successful.

Riverbend at Baghdad Burning (an Iraqi blogger) had a pretty moving response to this (or here for the sound bite version).

yeah. i read her post. it angered me, too. others have written far more eloquently about war and rape, but it still boggles me how the two often go hand in hand. nation-making and sexual assault on women and girls seem to happen at the same time.

It disgusts me actually. If you call that a training . Geez then maybe they should find a way to have it modified. It is horrible! It violates human rights!
